Waskow, Berman, Roth, Prager, Strassfeld

These are the names of dear elders and teachers who radically transformed American Judaism over the last fifty years. Visionaries who, in the 70s and 80s, looked around, saw a Judaism desperately in need of renewal, and did something about it!

From the Havurah movement to The Jewish Catalog, from rainbow tallitot to the founding of ALEPH, when Judaism met the Age of Aquarius, something profound happened to the trajectory of Jewish life forever. Many of today’s favorite innovations and practices of progressive Judaism came about thanks to these luminaries and their peers sensing something new was yearning to be born and midwifing it into existence.

THIS SUNDAY, come hear from Rabbis Arthur Waskow, Phyllis Berman, Jeff Roth, Marcia Prager, and Michael Strassfeld about the origins of Jewish renewal and the early days of renewing Judaism in America. Part oral history, part roundtable conversation, this is a unique opportunity to hear the founding story of one of American Judaism’s great transformations directly from those who transformed it.

This is the first of three sessions in our Renewing Judaism series, a collaborative series with ALEPH: Alliance for Jewish Renewal, featuring beloved teachers reflecting on the past, present, and future of renewing Judaism. Registration includes all three sessions, which will be recorded and sent to registrants. See below for the full series dates and speaker lineup.

This first session is being hosted in loving memory of Hazzan Jack Kessler, Rabbi Burt Jacobson, Rabbi Michael Lerner, and all of the early Renewal shapers who have recently joined the ancestors.
