Sukkot in Many Guises
Dear Companions,
On the evening of Tuesday, Oct 22, we will celebrate Hoshana Rabbah, the last day of Sukkot with a conversation between Gloria Steinem and Reb Arthur, songs, food, birthday cake for Reb Arthur as he turns 91, and Get Out the Vote Action. You have to register for either in-person or Zoom involvement.
Register at https://theshalomcenter.org/save-in.
We offer you these celebratory markers for Sukkot: Rabbi Phyllis Berman, my beloved life-partner, co-author, co-activist, wise adviser, and co-celebrant — with me in a photo of us at “Occupy Sukkot” at City Hall in Philadelphia; a song I wrote English words for, to a melody created by Rabbi Aryeh Hirschfeld z’l’; and a poster from the very earliest days of The Shalom Center, announcing a sukkah and a demonstration at Lafayette Park across from the White House 50 years ago. We were calling then to reduce and eliminate nuclear weapons throughout the world. We drew on a powerful midrash about the danger of a Flood of Fire. Now, not two but three Great Powers jockey to add to the Flood of Fire and smaller ones seek a share of the burning. Time to act to make real the blessings of shalom!
