Ancient Torah Defends Refugees from Brutal Bosses or Government Officials

Deuteronomy 23:16-17

You are not to hand over serfs to their master
who have sought-rescue by you from their master.

Beside you let them dwell, among you,
in the place that they choose, within one of your gates [that] seems good for them.
You are not to maltreat them!

In Los Angeles this past week, we have seen a brutal repression of people who are trying to protect the rights of refugees. Jewish and Christian faith-holders who see this Deuteronomy text as sacred should all be gathering to say, “NO KINGS!” In response to the atrocious repression in L.A., there will be “NO KINGS!” gatherings all across America this coming Saturday afternoon.

Please draw on this passage from Deuteronomy in speaking to your congregation on Friday and Saturday. If it accords with your own heart, values, and soul, please consider not just reporting these plans, but encouraging your congregants and friends to take part in these affirmations of Torah in action. You can find the “NO KINGS!” gathering closest to you by clicking here.

If you bring your energy peacefully to nurture peace in the world, we pray this will increase peacefulness and joy in your own life.

Shalom,

Arthur

P.S. – This passage from ancient Torah will be part of a chapter of my next book, “New Torah Now.” My Substack folks will join to refine and share “New Torah Now.” To register, click to RebArthurWaskow.substack.com.
